Pilar García Mouton is a Research Professor at the Institute for Language, Literature and Anthropology at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), where she also served as director. She obtained her PhD in Romance Philology at the Universidad Complutense, in Madrid, where she taught Spanish in the Faculty of Philology. She directed the magazine Revista de Filología Española between 2005 and 2015 and curated, with Mario Pedrazuela Fuentes, the exhibition La ciencia de la palabra. Cien años de la Revista de Filología Española held at the Cultural Centre Conde Duque in Madrid, from July to September 2015. The catalogue of this exhibition has been published by CSIC's printing press. From 1989 until 2006 she worked as an executive officer at Editorial Gredos, where she co-directed the collection Biblioteca Románica Hispánica. In December 2015 she was appointed Correspondent Member of the Royal Spanish Academy.

Specializing in Geolinguistics and Spanish language variation, she trained at CSIC with Manuel Alvar, with whom she coordinated research teams and undertook field work for the Atlas Lingüístico de Hispanoamérica in several countries. She conducted linguistic surveys for the Atlas Lingüístico de Castilla y León. She is currently coordinating a project for the CSIC and several Spanish and foreign universities to publish the Atlas Lingüístico de la Península Ibérica (ALPI) directed by Tomás Navarro Tomás, as well as the Atlas Lingüístico Interactivo de la Península Ibérica, a Digital Humanities project for Fundación BBVA in which she works alongside Inés Fernández-Ordóñez (Univ. Autónoma de Madrid), María Pilar Perea (Univ. de Barcelona), João Saramago (CLUL-Univ. de Lisboa), Xulio Sousa (Instituto da Lingua Galega-USC) and David Heap (Univ. of Western Ontario). She also co-directs with  Isabel Molina Martos the Atlas Dialectal de Madrid (ADiM), (2015- ) [online] www.adim.cchs.csic.es, an atlas documenting the social dialects of a reduced area. She co-directed with Francisco Moreno Fernández the Atlas Lingüístico y etnográfico de Castilla-La Mancha (ALeCMan), (2003- ) [online] www.linguas.net/alecman/ and participated as a researcher in the Atlas Lingüístico de Hispanoamérica. She is the vice chairperson of the Atlas Linguistique Roman (ALiR) and heads the Spanish committee of the Atlas Linguarum Europae (ALE), and has contributed as an author to the volumes published in the last decade. She is also a member of the International Society for Dialectology and Geolinguistics, and an advisor for the Atlas Lingüístico de Cuba.

Dr. García Mouton served as an advisor on European Spanish language variation in the volume, coordinated by José Manuel Blecua, on Phonetics and Phonology of the Nueva gramática de la lengua española [Ignacio Bosque, rapporteur], and managed the surveys included  included on the accompanying DVD.

From January 2005 to November 2008, she coordinated the Philology and Philosophy section of the National Agency for Assessment and Forecasting (ANEP). She also serves as an assessor for the main Spanish assessment agencies, as well as for several foreign agencies.

She coordinates the ANEP-FECYT joint commission for the definition of assessment criteria in the Humanities, whose worked was published under the title Criterios de calidad en la investigación en Humanidades (ANEP-FECYT, 2007).

Dr. García Mouton hosts the section "Palabras moribundas" ("Dying words") in the radio show No es un día cualquiera, directed by Pepa Fernández on Radio Nacional de España, reviews books for the cultural supplement El Cultural and is a member of the Advisory Board of FundéuBBVA since December 2012.
